CompAsia Pledges Leadership At MCMC’S Lestari Launch To Accelerate Malaysia’s Circular Tech Roadmap

KUALA LUMPUR, 29 SEPTEMBER 2026 — CompAsia Sdn. Bhd. has officially signed the Leadership Pledge as one of 15 inaugural signatories of the newly established Net Zero & Circularity Alliance (NZCA). The alliance was unveiled during the official launch of the LESTARI: Sustainability Framework and Roadmap 2030 (SFR2030) on 28 September 2026 at Hilton Kuala Lumpur, officiated by Minister of Communications YB Dato' Seri Fahmi Fadzil and organized by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Developed following extensive industry engagement involving 116 participants across 47 organizations, LESTARI (SFR2030) establishes a regulator-led, industry-enabled roadmap featuring 52 targeted measures across Malaysia's telecommunications, broadcasting, postal, and courier sectors. The initiative’s first phase (2026–2027) focuses on establishing industry baselines, key performance indicators, and cross-sector partnerships. Looking towards 2030, the overarching roadmap targets sustainably managing 15 million devices through reuse, upgrades, and responsible recycling; building 300 e-waste collection and refurbishment points nationwide; and benefiting 5 million Malaysians—particularly low-income and vulnerable groups—by expanding access to affordable technology through social impact programmes.

Representing CompAsia at the launch, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) George Hashim reinforced the company's commitment to providing the operational capabilities needed to translate these national targets into measurable environmental impact.

"As an inaugural signatory of MCMC’s Net Zero & Circularity Alliance under LESTARI SFR2030, CompAsia is proud to demonstrate that tech circularity delivers real environmental impact," said George Hashim, Chief Strategy Officer of CompAsia. "Since our establishment in 2012, we have transacted over 3 million devices—avoiding an estimated 240,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions while reducing e-waste and expanding access to quality tech for Malaysians.

"In 2025, nearly 10 million new smartphones were sold in Malaysia, generating an estimated 800,000 metric tonnes of upstream production emissions; circular solutions are more critical than ever. Together with MCMC and fellow alliance signatories, we look forward to driving the roadmap's target of sustainably managing 15 million devices by 2030."

George Hashim’s perspective underscores the critical environmental imperative behind the Alliance, highlighting that extending device lifecycles offers a proven, immediate avenue for carbon reduction—a core focus for CompAsia over the past decade.

Under the Net Zero & Circularity Alliance pledge, CompAsia will collaborate with MCMC and fellow industry signatories to deliver structured outcomes across three core pillars:

  • Circularise: Advancing end-to-end circular economy practices—optimizing consumer device trade-ins, technical refurbishment, reverse logistics, and responsible end-of-life recovery.
  • Decarbonise: Measuring, reporting, and actively reducing operational greenhouse gas emissions in line with Malaysia’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and national net-zero targets.
  • Lead: Championing sustainability through visible leadership, community outreach, and cross-sector alignment to make circular technology the standard across Southeast Asia.

By combining MCMC’s regulatory framework with CompAsia’s regional infrastructure and operational track record, the partnership establishes a clear execution model for reducing electronic waste, lowering manufacturing emissions, and making digital technology accessible to all Malaysians.
